Enrique de Álava (Pamplona, Spain, 1964) got his M.D. (1988), his PhD (1993), and his
speciality in Pathology (1993) at the University of Navarra, Spain. He has been able to
combine Pathology clinics, research, and teaching. Postdoctoral period at Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center (1994-1996) thanks to a postdoctoral grant from the Spanish Ministry
of Education and Science. This period was crucial to focus his professional objective on the
diagnosis and translational research of sarcomas. In 2013 he was appointed Chairman and
Professor of Pathology at Virgen del Rocío University Hospital and the University of Seville. He
is a Principal Investigator (2013-) and Coordinator (2020-) of the Oncohematology and Genetics
program of the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville. He is the Coordinator of the Precision
Medicine Strategy of the Regional Government of Andalucia (2022-). Former President of
the Spanish Academy of Pathology (2015-2017), he is a Vice-President for Europe of the
International Academy of Pathology (2017-)
